Hurricanes

As part of the NSF-funded Water’s Journey through the Everglades project, the E2i team produced a two-player serious game that explored how to protect your home against an impending hurricane. In the experience, one player created a house, and one player created a storm to send against the southeastern coast of Florida. Who will be the winner?

The learners of all ages at MODS loved challenging their family and friends to see who could secure (or not as the gameplay allowed) their house. Within all the fun and excitement, learning was definitely happening. External learning evaluators conducted summative evaluation on the learning happening, and their discussions with youth and families showed clear evidence that the simulations allowed personal connections to be created, layered information allowed deeper exploration by learners, and adolescents’ confidence in their ability to understand the relevance of science in their lives increased.
